Team Building
There are many ways to go about team building in Honkai: Star Rail. The most important thing though is to determine who to build the team around. Many people have a character or two that they’re particularly fond of and want to make work. It’s important to know certain synergies and aspects of a character’s kit to know who to use with them. A great example is Acheron. She wants a lot of debuffs applied to the enemies in order to charge her ultimate. Therefore, characters like Jiaoqiu would work well. Every character has some sort of synergy with other certain characters. Knowing why and trying it yourself is a good way to learn how to play teams properly.
In this section, I’ll go over certain team compositions to focus on depending on your favorite character. I’ll also go over general ways to build the characters to give a rough idea of how team building works in Honkai: Star Rail.

Team Compositions
Certain characters need teammates to make their kit work properly. Using Acheron as an example, she needs two other Nihility characters to work at maximum potential. She also needs teammates that can apply a lot of debuffs to use her ultimate. Since Nihility characters naturally apply a lot of debuffs, it’s moreso a matter of who does it the best. Jiaoqiu is known to be the best partner for Acheron due to his debuff frequency. Another good and accessible option is Pela, a nice 4 star character with great defense shred. That takes care of Acheron’s two Nihility partners. Now for a sustain unit, there are two main characters that can apply debuffs: Aventurine and Gallagher. Gallagher is much more easily accessible due to being a 4 star character.
Thinking about team compositions like this makes things easier for you. It lets you know who you should go for when pulling characters. Look at character’s kits and the current selection of characters to see you can get by with cheaper alternatives. The Herta is a great example. She needs another Erudtion unit to work, and there’s amazing easy options like small Herta and Serval. Castorice is another unit that can utilize free options like Gallagher and Rememberance Trailblazer. You definitely don’t need all the best premium units to make your favorite characters function.
Break and Follow Up Attack Teams
Aside from Acheron, other popular characters like Firefly and Feixiao need certain requirements too. Thankfully, they also have some nice and easily accessible options that don’t require spending stellar jades. One of Firefly’s best partners is Harmony Trailblazer, and Gallagher yet again is a great sustain option if you don’t have Lingsha. That’s already two free characters for her to use. The nice thing about the Firefly team is that you can invest into it further if you want and get great results. Getting characters like Lingsha to replace Gallagher or Fugue to replace Harmony Trailblazer not only frees up those characters to be used on other teams, but also work well with Firefly due to her putting Fire weakness on everything.
Feixiao is a bit more greedy when it comes to teammates. She requires teammate that do follow up attacks frequently in order to charge her ultimate. At the moment, there’s really only two sustain options that do follow up attacks: Aventurine and Lingsha. So either way, you’re going to be preferring a premium character. Robin is also by far the best support for Feixiao, and the follow up team charges Robin’s ultimate the most efficiently. Thankfully, Feixiao has amazing easily accessible partners in March 7th Hunt and Moze. There’s a big misconception in some players than you NEED to get certain characters for teams to work, or that you need them for certain content, when that simply isnt’ true. Sure, some characters definitely perform better with premium characters, but that’s to be expected since you’re spending currency. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you NEED those characters to clear the content.
Build The Characters Properly
I feel that there is a common issue when it comes to games. And that issue is that most people do not actually read the kits of characters and know how they work. People are generally more lazy and casual when it comes to gacha games, which leads to some issues when it comes to clearing the harder content, and Honkai: Star Rail is no exception to this. Some characters require certain stats in order to actually use their kit properly, and some people do not realize that. Take this passive of Lingsha, for example.

Reading this, this means that Lingsha needs at least 200% Break Effect minimum in order to maximize her passive. Thankfully, this is easy due to her teammates Ruan Mei and Harmony Trailblazer giving her a ton of break effect for free, as well as the use of some light cones that give break effect. Be sure to pay attention to certain character’s stats to ensure they’re hitting key breakpoints in order to get the most use out of them.
Know What Stats You Don’t Need
On the flipside, certain stats can be completely ignored depending on how you build your teams. Some characters don’t need speed whatsoever in order to function, while others don’t need effect hit rate to land their debuffs. It’s important to know what the character’s abilities do in order to give them the best relics to do their jobs. If you’re using a team with an action advance support like Sparkle, then your main carry don’t really need to worry about getting speed on their gear. Characters like Lingsha and Aventurine have debuffs in their kits, but they are guaranteed to land, so they don’t need effect hit rate at all.
Relic effects also change the way to build characters. A lot of planar ornaments have breakpoints that need to be reached in order to activate their effects. Some relics also need this requirement. However, one big thing to keep in mind is that a lot of these can also be obtained from using character buffs. A good example is Harmony Trailblazer. Look at the Iron Cavalry relic effect.

Normally, getting to the 250% break effect breakpoint alone is quite tough. However, Harmony Trailblazer gives a bunch of break effect from their buffs, and their main relic set, Watchmaker, gives the whole team 30% break effect as well. All of these buffs count toward reaching the 250% break effect breakpoint, so it’s much easier than it seems on paper. However, you still need to have a sufficient amount of break effect on your characters beforehand to reach that breakpoint after all the buffs are applied.
Hopefully this gives you a better grasp at team building and how to build certain characters. The video below is another great resource aimed at beginners when it comes to team building. Sevy is a great content creator and I do recommend her videos.
